[The Pronunciation Challenge] helped me a lot in improving my pronunciation

I really enjoyed Jennie’s 5-day Pronunciation Challenge!
English is not my first language and I’ve lived in more than one English-speaking country. Even though I would say my English is now at a high professional level, there is always room for improvement, right? 😉
My favourite (and a very cringy at first) task was to record myself speaking English and then listen back to that recording.
It helped me a lot in improving my pronunciation, as I realised that all I needed was - to slow down- speak more slowly and articulate clearly! 😃
I would highly recommend working with Jennie, whatever your level of English, because you will definitely improve it even further! 💯

Just imagine if...

  • instead of feeling embarrassed about your pronunciation, you hold your head high when speaking with proficient English speakers

  • instead of worrying about your mistakes, you are able to smile, relax and focus on your message, while connecting with the people around you

  • instead of feeling like your English isn't good enough to use at work, you aim for and reach your professional goals, knowing your language skills are supporting you

  • instead of hesitating and feeling self-doubt, you speak fluently, with clarity and confidence
How much do other people's words affect your self-esteem?

Often our self-confidence can be linked to the tiny things other people say.

I know that mine was.

Let me share a little bit of my story.

When I lived, and worked, in Italy, I was
told, on two or three occasions, that when
I spoke Italian I sounded German.

At the time, I was so embarrassed.

Not that there's anything wrong with sounding German, but I wanted to sound Italian.

However, I couldn't roll my 'r's and
I spent hours berating myself for this and
cringing every time I said a word that
contained the 'r'!

Anyway, now I can roll my 'r's (most of the time) and I don't worry whether other people think I sound German, British or Italian!

What's your story?

Thank you for sharing such a fun challenge, I loved each single task.

What's more, I believe it was a powerful reminder we should never stop practising, being curious, and having fun with languages - especially if we're teaching a language which is not our mother tongue.

Pronunciation is a key element to both understanding native speakers and being understood and it really does make a difference. Most of my students struggle to get this at the beginning. Yet, when they finally manage to improve their pronunciation, they immediately feel more confident and realize they've taken their listening skills to the next level - and that's usually when they start asking for classes fully dedicated to it.

So thank you for bringing it all to our attention!
